Key facts

  • MagicEndpoint

    What it is

MagicEndpoint delivers passwordless, phishing-resistant MFA by making the managed computer itself the authenticator, using hardware-backed keys in the TPM or Secure Enclave already built into most laptops and desktops. It can act as a standalone identity provider, or sit behind Okta, Microsoft Entra ID or Ping as a delegated identity provider.

WinMagic MagicEndpoint

When is WinMagic MagicEndpoint the right choice?

When your fleet is managed Windows and Mac computers, and you want to keep Okta while replacing FastPass, including for sign-ins beyond the browser and in networks with no internet.

  • Keeps Okta

MagicEndpoint sits behind Okta as a delegated identity provider. Okta keeps the directory, policies and application catalog, with no application changes.

    Passkey rollout
  • Replaces FastPass on Windows and Mac

People sign in to their computer once, and MagicEndpoint signs them in to applications from the computer itself, with no prompt. The key is anchored in the TPM on Windows, where there is one, and in the Secure Enclave on Mac.

  • Windows sign-in and Remote Desktop

On Windows, the same methods work at the sign-in screen and in Remote Desktop and VDI sessions: FIDO2 passkeys, smartcards, the phone app or a TPM PIN.

    Windows login
  • Beyond the browser

WinMagic lists SAML, OIDC, WS-Fed, RADIUS, LDAP, SSH and RDP among MagicEndpoint's protocols.

    MagicEndpoint
  • On-premises, self-hosted or SaaS

Run it on-premises, including air-gapped networks with no internet, phones or cloud identity provider; self-hosted; or as SaaS managed by WinMagic and hosted in Microsoft Azure's Canadian datacenter.

    Air-gapped networks
  • The person and the device in one answer

Each sign-in comes from a verified person on a computer that is in policy. If either condition fails, the next sign-in from that computer fails.

MagicEndpoint replaces FastPass on managed Windows and Mac computers, and signs in to the computer itself on Windows. If many of your people work on Linux desktops, compare the other options on this page.

Okta FastPass

When is Okta FastPass still the right choice?

When your sign-ins run through Okta and many of them come from Linux desktops, phones or tablets.

Okta lists FastPass and passkeys as its phishing-resistant authenticators (Okta: phishing-resistant authenticators), and FastPass works through Okta Verify on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows (Okta: FastPass documentation). With Device-Bound SSO, Okta keeps its session on the device until the person signs out or an administrator ends it (Okta: Device-Bound SSO).

FastPass covers sign-ins that run through Okta. Signing in to the computer is a separate Okta capability, Desktop MFA, which covers the Windows sign-in screen and doesn't support Remote Desktop (Okta: Desktop MFA). On managed Windows and Mac computers, MagicEndpoint replaces FastPass, and on Windows it also signs people in to the computer and to Remote Desktop sessions. For RADIUS, Okta lists Okta Verify in TOTP and push modes only (Okta: RADIUS apps); MagicEndpoint covers RADIUS logins under the same policy as the Windows sign-in.

Other alternatives

How do the other Okta FastPass alternatives differ?

The full detail for each vendor is in its column of the comparison table.

Beyond Identity

Beyond Identity is cloud-native: devices must reach its cloud domains, so it doesn't run in air-gapped networks. Its passkeys also cover Linux desktops, and it re-checks user, device and third-party risk every 10 minutes during a session. Its Windows Desktop Login 2.0 needs a YubiKey 5 series key.

OS support Zero Trust Auth Desktop Login 2.0

HYPR

HYPR makes the phone the main authenticator, with security keys or smart cards for people without one. It runs as HYPR Cloud or self-hosted and also covers Linux endpoints. Offline, workstations unlock from a limited set of PINs.

Authenticate intro Release notes HYPR Authenticate Offline Mode

Cisco Duo

Duo is a cloud service; RADIUS and LDAP go through its on-premises Authentication Proxy. Duo Federal is FedRAMP Authorized. Duo says “Standard Duo Push does not protect against phishing proxy attacks”, so phishing resistance needs passkeys or proximity verification.

Design

Why does WinMagic tie the person and the device into one key?

Because Zero Trust has to check both at once: an authorized person on a compromised device should not get in.

NIST's Zero Trust architecture decides access by "dynamic policy—including the observable state of client identity, application/service, and the requesting asset" (NIST SP 800-207).

MagicEndpoint holds the person, the device and its policy state in one key on the computer. The key is available only while the verified person is signed in and the computer is in policy. When either fails, the key is made unavailable, so the next sign-in from that computer fails while the person's other devices keep working.

Deployment

How do you add MagicEndpoint to Okta?

Okta routes the sign-in to MagicEndpoint as an external identity provider, the computer answers with no prompt, and Okta issues its session as it does today.

How one sign-in flows with MagicEndpoint behind Okta 1. The person signs in to the computer once. 2. The computer opens an application. 3. The application sends the sign-in to Okta. 4. Okta routes it to MagicEndpoint. 5. MagicEndpoint checks the person, device and policy with the computer, with no prompt. 6. MagicEndpoint answers Okta. 7. Okta issues its session to the application, as today. Person's computer Application Okta MagicEndpoint 1 Signs in once 2 Opens an application 3 Sends the sign-in to Okta 4 Routes to MagicEndpoint 5 Checks the person, device and policy, with no prompt 6 Answers 7 Issues its session, as today
How one sign-in flows with MagicEndpoint behind Okta. Applications keep talking to Okta, unchanged.
  1. Keep Okta as it is. Directory, policies, application catalog and integrations stay where they are.
  2. Add MagicEndpoint as an identity provider in Okta. Okta's routing rules decide who signs in with it (Okta: routing rules).
  3. Install MagicEndpoint on managed Windows and Mac computers. People on personal or unmanaged devices can use the MagicEndpoint phone app.
  4. People sign in to their computer once. From then on, MagicEndpoint signs them in to applications from the computer, with no prompt.
  5. Check your Okta authentication policies with WinMagic before rollout, so each application's requirements are met for people who sign in through MagicEndpoint. People not yet on MagicEndpoint keep signing in as today.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the alternatives to Okta FastPass for mid-market enterprises?

WinMagic MagicEndpoint, Beyond Identity, HYPR and Cisco Duo. MagicEndpoint keeps Okta and replaces FastPass on managed Windows and Mac computers, and also covers Windows sign-in, Remote Desktop, SSH, RADIUS, LDAP and air-gapped networks. Beyond Identity is cloud-only and also covers Linux desktops. HYPR makes the phone the main authenticator. Duo is a cloud service with an on-premises proxy for RADIUS and LDAP, and needs passkeys or proximity verification for phishing resistance.

How is WinMagic MagicEndpoint different from Okta FastPass?

FastPass works through Okta Verify, for sign-ins that run through Okta. MagicEndpoint sits behind Okta as a delegated identity provider and signs people in from the managed computer itself, with no prompt. It also covers Windows sign-in, Remote Desktop, SSH, RADIUS and LDAP, and works with Entra ID and Ping as well as Okta.

Does MagicEndpoint replace Okta?

No. Okta keeps the directory, policies and application catalog. MagicEndpoint replaces FastPass as the way people on managed Windows and Mac computers sign in, with no application changes. It can also act as its own identity provider.

Where does Okta FastPass still fit?

Where many sign-ins come from Linux desktops, phones or tablets. FastPass works through Okta Verify on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, while MagicEndpoint replaces it on managed Windows and Mac computers.

Does MagicEndpoint work without internet?

Yes. In an air-gapped deployment, MagicEndpoint runs entirely on-premises, without internet connectivity, phones or a cloud identity provider. It is also available self-hosted, or as SaaS, managed by WinMagic and hosted in Microsoft Azure's Canadian datacenter.
