On Tuesday, I mentioned we’d be making an announcement today related to Self Encrypting Drives (SEDs) and as promised, here are the details.
Today we announced the results of Ponemon Institute study commissioned by WinMagic and co-sponsored by leading SED manufacturers including: Intel, LSI, Micron, Plextor, Seagate, Samsung and Toshiba. In this study, it was found that businesses can see as much as 75% cost savings when using hardware-based encryption.
Now that likely seems like a strange thing for a Software Encryption company to say and promote, but WinMagic’s focus is on the encryption and security of data at rest. Whether it’s using our software to do the encryption or the hardware-based encryption of an SED makes no difference to us. With SecureDoc, customers are able to manage both centrally and ensure the integrity of their data on endpoint devices.
When you then factor in features such a PBConnex, we can further reduce that overall TCO – and THAT is why this study is important. It clearly demonstrates the savings and benefits of SEDs and strong, centralized management of a data security solution.
In addition to this, we’ve also enlisted the support of our key industry partners that bring leading SED products to market. We work with these vendors day-in and day-out to ensure the product we offer works with the best SEDs in the industry and their support of this study is a testament to our relationship and mutual focus on delivering the best security solutions to our customers.

In addition to all of this, we’ll be hosting a Webinar on April 30th to review the results of the study with Larry Ponemon as well as hear from the co-sponsors of this study. To register for the webinar, just go here.
